Family Portraits September 2, 2006

Mom sent me a box of goodies for my project.  Tucked inside were a few negatives–copies of some family portraits she had gathered years before.  I was amazed and thrilled to see the images after I scanned them!  I would count us as very lucky to have family portraits that go so far back.  (Grandpa Dickel is my great-great-great grandfather!)  If you’re unsure of who everyone is, check out the family tree.

The Siewert Family

PS  Friedrich Wilhelm Siewert apparently went by his middle name, Wilhelm….

Thanks Ma!!!

You can imagine my surprise to get to work today and find a letter addressed to me from someone in Sussex!  (A name I didn’t recognize, too.)  Fred Keller, who works for the Sussex-Lisbon Historical Society, had been given an email I wrote to the Sussex Sun—I was trying to find a copy of an article written about David Headley visiting England.  The Sussex Sun couldn’t help me, but they contacted Fred to see if he could be of any further assistance.  He recommended I contact Grandpa—and soon—because ”he is OLD”–not knowing I was related.

Fred wrote a little about the prominent Headley family.  He included a copy of an article he wrote about Grandma when she won a trip to Disney World—which has a lot of great biographical information about her early years!  (Though I don’t know if it’s the full article.)

Fred also copied a page from “Al and Madeline Halquist’s” family history book…  It has a photo of Edna with Grandpa, and of Norman.  Unfortunately, the copy is poor and the photos are hard to make out.  I guess the historical society has a copy?  I wonder if it’s just a photo album or if it contains stories and biographical information as well?  Can anyone go the historical society and take a glance?  I guess I’ll have to ask Fred to find out!

Boarding House Reach July 19, 2006

Posted by hearhart in : Matie Headley, add a comment

Grandpa asked, “do you want stories or facts?  Because I know lots of stories, but not so many facts!  Of course, every story contains at least one fact!”  He’s not the only one with stories that are bigger on the embellishments than the hard core facts……

All growing up I had heard about the “Boarding House Rule”.  Sitting at the table–one must keep on foot on the floor at all times–anything else goes!  Mom would tell us this at the dinner table (most likely when we were getting unruly and fighting over who got the mashed potatoes first).

I told the little story at the beach–and no one had heard of it!  (Of course, no one had heard of the “Siewert Nose”, but that didn’t mean such a thing didn’t exist–I had seen it for myself!)  I gave it little thought at the time and later told my mom.  Well, last night she confessed!  She made up the rule.    She knew about the boarding house Matie grew up in and made up the rule!    She thought it sounded good and was plausible and (I assume) would help keep the kids in line.

Now, I’m still fond of the story and it’s well ingrained into my personal family folklore……  So I’d like to keep it around.  But, I’ll make sure to mark it as an “embellished” story.

Do you have the Siewert Nose?

The Siewert Nose

All growing up I’ve heard of the “Siewert Nose”–in fact I still think I might have one myself! I asked my mom to describe it and tell me who had it…….

“The Siewert’s have it… Grandma Siewert, Mother, Beaulah, and Joyce have it… I have it along with Pam, Jill, Janna, etc… YOU may have it if you’re lucky… look at my mother’s HS graduation picture and mine and you should see what I mean… ~Jean”

I’m going to track down those photos and try to post them, as well as compare it to a picture of MY nose! Do you have the Siewert Nose? Care to share a picture?
