“I don’t know the origin of this recipe but it has been a Headley favorite for years. I’ve never found it in any recipe books, but I have run across Sour Cream Apple Pie. The recipe originally called for a lattice top but Mother would use a generous portion of the sugar and cinnamon on top.” ~ Jean

1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 tablespoons flour
1/2 pint (8 ounces) sour cream
7 or 8 peaches, peeled and sliced

Fill an unbaked pie shell with fresh sliced peaches. Blend the rest of the above ingredients and pour over peaches. Cover with pastry strips, lattice fashion. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar mixed with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes then at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Let cool before serving.

Family Portraits September 2, 2006

Mom sent me a box of goodies for my project.  Tucked inside were a few negatives–copies of some family portraits she had gathered years before.  I was amazed and thrilled to see the images after I scanned them!  I would count us as very lucky to have family portraits that go so far back.  (Grandpa Dickel is my great-great-great grandfather!)  If you’re unsure of who everyone is, check out the family tree.

The Siewert Family

PS  Friedrich Wilhelm Siewert apparently went by his middle name, Wilhelm….

Thanks Ma!!!

You can imagine my surprise to get to work today and find a letter addressed to me from someone in Sussex!  (A name I didn’t recognize, too.)  Fred Keller, who works for the Sussex-Lisbon Historical Society, had been given an email I wrote to the Sussex Sun—I was trying to find a copy of an article written about David Headley visiting England.  The Sussex Sun couldn’t help me, but they contacted Fred to see if he could be of any further assistance.  He recommended I contact Grandpa—and soon—because ”he is OLD”–not knowing I was related.

Fred wrote a little about the prominent Headley family.  He included a copy of an article he wrote about Grandma when she won a trip to Disney World—which has a lot of great biographical information about her early years!  (Though I don’t know if it’s the full article.)

Fred also copied a page from “Al and Madeline Halquist’s” family history book…  It has a photo of Edna with Grandpa, and of Norman.  Unfortunately, the copy is poor and the photos are hard to make out.  I guess the historical society has a copy?  I wonder if it’s just a photo album or if it contains stories and biographical information as well?  Can anyone go the historical society and take a glance?  I guess I’ll have to ask Fred to find out!

Do you have the Siewert Nose? July 14, 2006

The Siewert Nose

All growing up I’ve heard of the “Siewert Nose”–in fact I still think I might have one myself! I asked my mom to describe it and tell me who had it…….

“The Siewert’s have it… Grandma Siewert, Mother, Beaulah, and Joyce have it… I have it along with Pam, Jill, Janna, etc… YOU may have it if you’re lucky… look at my mother’s HS graduation picture and mine and you should see what I mean… ~Jean”

I’m going to track down those photos and try to post them, as well as compare it to a picture of MY nose! Do you have the Siewert Nose? Care to share a picture?
